Monthly Highlights

Happy 2013

Don’t start that diet tomorrow!

As most of you noticed by now, we’re still here. The Mayan’s predicted the end of the world and indeed the world as we knew it has ended and given birth to a new consciousness.

I hope all of you took some time to contemplate what in your world was best to come to an end, letting you create a clear, open space for the New Year to fill with something better.

As some of you noticed, I took some time off from writing the weekly moon signs and I also spent very little time on Facebook for the last six weeks of the year. I felt I had to take the advice I was giving others and spend time reflecting on the coming paradigm shift and what it meant in my life. It was one of most powerful times I’ve experienced and I must give some credit to Dr. Malcolm Smith and his Lifesmithing program with homeopathy; I’ve been having such amazing experiences of transformation.  Healing has taken on new meaning in my life and for many of those I love so much as well!

The New Year is now beginning to manifest its energies in our life, but we begin it during a Full Moon Cycle, so if you want to use the energies at their best then first spend time on a more inner level and consider what would really be important to change or begin in your life.  January 11th begins the first New Moon Cycle of 2013 and between then and January 25th we’re in the best cycle to start new projects, ideas, and lifestyle changes.  Many of us tend to focus on health, diet, and exercise as our resolution, if so then January 17th with the Moon in Aries is a great day to get started. An Aries Moon gives us a boost of energy physically as well as inspiration to step into new territory.  If you’re all about making financial changes then January 19th with the Moon in Taurus is the best day to start that focus, it’s the sign that rules self-worth and helps you understand how to express that in the physical.

Whatever you feel is important for you in 2013 remember to leave the past behind. You have an opportunity to start with a clean slate now.  Consider making a list of past mistakes, failures, or what caused you to not attain your dreams. Read them out loud and affirm that from this moment on these no longer exist, tear up the list and burn it, flush it or just throw it out.  Write an affirmation for the New Year that proclaims the new you!

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde November 6 through November 26

The planet of communication and intellect will be going into its last retrograde of the year on November 6th at 3:04 p.m. PST and 5:04 p.m. EST and will go direct on November 26th at 2:48 p.m. PST and 5:48 p.m. EST.

When Mercury goes retrograde we find we are not able to think as clearly as we normally do. Since Mercury rules our thinking, during the retrograde our mind is not all that focused on the present, it wanders. That is unless you are born with Mercury retrograde, then it’s your high time. At least 2/3rds of us are not Mercury retrograde and everyone is affected by it. I like to remind my Mercury retrograde people, even though this is your high cycle, remember you are affected by those who will be doing things like driving their cars the wrong way on a one-way street!

During this cycle: get grounded, pay attention, double-check reservations, receipts and change. Leave extra time for driving and getting ready for work.  During the retrograde we tend to misplace our keys, lose a shoe, and break a zipper, and of course electronics mysteriously go haywire. It’s not some gremlin that shows up and plays havoc with us, it’s just user error, we are not thinking clearly.

The nature of Mercury retrograde is to give us time to stop and breathe. Finish up projects that need completion. Reflect on where we’re headed, maybe rethink a decision. Of course our western thinking is rooted in doing so much that we keep trying to swim against the current. If possible take some time during this period to reflect, allow a higher energy to help you see a clearer vision about your life. Slow down and be present wherever you are and get the most out of these three weeks.

Harvest Moon

Saturday, September 22nd, we experienced the Autumnal Equinox! That occurs when the Sun enters into Libra and along with the Vernal Equinox, the Summer Solstice and the Winter Solstice, it is one of the Seasonal points of reference on which we base most Western Astrology. We use these four points as the four corners that all twelve signs are measured within.  It’s the Cardinal Cross because when the Sun enters into one of the Cardinal signs, we begin the new season. Coming up on September 29th will be the Harvest Moon.

The Full Moon that occurs in September is called the Harvest Moon because from an astronomical perspective we’re close to the Autumnal Equinox and the position of the Earth and Sun being almost equal makes the Moon appear much larger and brighter than normal and the full moon will last for several days. In ancient times this gave farmers a few extra days to harvest crops later into the night.

The Full Moon will occur on September 29th at 8:19 p.m. PST and 11:19 p.m. EST in the sign of Aries. This is a very fiery energy that spurs ideas and motivates us to move forward. Since it’s actually a Full Moon we have to be aware of emotions that will also be very fiery! Avoid conflicts by taking time to be more grounded, avoid alcohol and bars and any meeting place where tempers can easily get stirred up. The Aries energy is very warrior-like, we like to take on challenges during its lunar run.  Being competitive can be wonderful in a positive setting, not so good when the room is full of testosterone! If you’re going to be driving it would be wise to plan a bit ahead and avoid traffic that will create frustration and anxiety.

Instead use this amazing Moon to go for a walk, explore a park that offers chess games or music in the evening. Perhaps an evening stargazing with a picnic. In many Northern climates the evenings will be too cold to really enjoy another Full Moon and this one is really spectacular to be missed.

Something worth noting for all you Libra’s, you can finally celebrate your birthday this year knowing the two and half year Saturn cycle in Libra will be concluding on October 5th when the Karmic teacher moves into Scorpio until late in 2015. You have worked hard and endured many of the trials and tribulations for which Saturn is known. Appreciate the growth it’s brought you and know it returns in 30 years to see what you accomplished with the wisdom it provided!

Mercury Retrograde

MERCURY RETROGRADE July 14th through August 4th 2012!

The planet of communication, transportation and intellect will be going retrograde on July 14th 2012 at 7:16 p.m. PST and 10:16 p.m. EST until August 7th, 2012 when it turns direct at 10:40 p.m. PST and August 8th, 2012 at 1:40 a.m. EST.

When Mercury goes retrograde we find we are not able to think as clearly as we normally do. Since Mercury rules our thinking, during the retrograde our mind is not all that focused on the present, it wanders. That is, unless you are born with Mercury retrograde, then it’s your high cycle to get things accomplished. For at least 2/3rds of us we are not Mercury retrograde, meaning we are not born during a Mercury retrograde cycle and therefore we have a direct motion Mercury in our charts. I like to remind people born with Mercury retrograde, even though this is your high cycle remember you are affected by those who will be doing things like driving their cars the wrong way on a one way street!

During this cycle: get grounded, pay attention, double check reservations, receipts and change.

Of course our western thinking is rooted in doing, doing, doing all the time so we keep trying to swim against the current. If possible take some time during this period to reflect, allow a higher energy to help you see a clearer vision about your life. Slow down and be present wherever you are and get the most out of these three weeks. And of course remember, this too shall pass!

Venus Retrograde

VENUS RETROGRADE MAY 15th THROUGH JUNE 27th, 2012
When the planet of love and desire goes into retrograde motion this month its part of several Gemini events the heavens seemed to have planned for us in just a few short weeks. Venus retrograde is one of the rarest of the inner planetary retrogrades because it only retrogrades every eighteen months as compared to Mercury which goes retrograde three times in a twelve month period.

During these weeks Venus asks us to reassess what we really want in life and have our values changed. It beckons us to stop and look at what we’ve manifested through desire and determine if it has brought us happiness. Venus is all about what makes us happy. We often have to find out what makes us unhappy to truly know what will bring us happiness.

Venus will be retrograde in the sign of Gemini and this will help us understand the powerful effect our minds have on what we create and how important positive thinking is.

Besides Venus being retrograde in Gemini, the New Moon Solar Eclipse on May 20th occurs with the Sun and Moon in Gemini, and on June 5th & 6th we will experience a rare transit of Venus in front of the Sun. All these events occur in the sign of Gemini!

Look at your natal birth chart, the area where you have the sign of Gemini is going to be highlighted and very active for the next few weeks! Of course if you actually have a Luminary or Planet in Gemini it greatly increases the opportunity for events and change in your life.

Gemini is the sign of intellect and quick movement, it promotes the daily thought process and all forms of communication. With such a powerful age of technology upon us perhaps we would benefit to step back and consider how dependent we’ve become on texting and cell phones.  While it has given the world a chance to become smaller and more intimate it has also caused many of us to chatter endlessly about insignificant topics and information.  Speaking our truth and learning how powerful silence can be is part of what the events of this month offer.

Enjoy being part of history! The next time Venus will transit in front of the Sun will be in 2117!

Mercury Retrograde

MERCURY RETROGRADE March 12th through April 4th 2012!

The planet of communication, transportation and intellect will be going retrograde on March 12th 2012 at 0:49 a.m. PST and 3:49 a.m. EST until April 4th, 2012 when it turns direct at 3:11 a.m. PST and 6:11 a.m.

Year of the Dragon

January 23, 2012 is Chinese New Year and begins the Year of the Dragon. I’ve also seen a few sites listing February 4, 2012 as the beginning of the Chinese New Year, however I’ve always considered the New Moon in Aquarius in the Western calendar as the event that correlates with Chinese New Year because it is the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice, and that is January 23 this year.

In Chinese Astrology twelve animal signs represent the complete zodiac, but what many people don’t realize is that there are five elements to each sign: Fire, Water, Earth, Metal and Wood.  When someone casts a birth horoscope in Chinese Astrology they consider an animal and element for the day, considering the year and time separately. Someone can be Year of the Monkey but hour of the Snake and day of the Rat, and each one can be a different element.

Similar to Western Astrology’s Jupiter Cycle, each animal sign in Chinese Astrology repeats every twelve years, the element changes each time and follows cycles. This Year the element is Water.

What’s really interesting is that the Dragon is the only mythological creature of the twelve and it is considered to be the most powerful of all the animal symbols. This year also changes a sixty year pattern and is expected to bring much needed change to the world.

The Year of the Water Dragon is predicted to make wonderful change and bring about prosperity and abundance after many years of destructive cycles.  For most this will be a much welcomed cycle and it may create some powerful changes in the world.

Whatever change it brings I’m looking forward to the movement and shifts in the world. Stay positive and get moving in your life personally and see what kind of magical things you might create! Happy 2012!

Lunar Eclipse

The Lunar Eclipse starts on December 10th, 2011 6:36 a.m. PST and 9:36 a.m. EST

This is the last Lunar Eclipse of the year! We conclude this year’s Eclipses with a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Gemini, 18°Gemini for those of you counting.

A Solar Eclipse occurs during a New Moon when the Moon blocks the Sun from the Earth. A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the Earth and the Earth blocks the Suns light to the Moon. Remember, a Full Moon is when the Moon is exactly opposite the Sun, the degree of the Sun sign is exactly opposite the degree of the Moon sign, and the light is focused on the Moon.  A New Moon occurs when the Moon is exactly next to the Sun, the same degree of the Sun Sign, which makes the Moon dark because there is no light shining on it. A Lunar Eclipse can only occur during a Full Moon and a Solar eclipse can only occur on a New Moon.

The Sun provides a never-ending flow of energy to the Earth. This energy is comprised of X-ray, Gamma, Ultraviolet, Infrared, and Microwave to name a few. When we describe the word “energy” most of us understand that there are also spiritual terms for this such as Chi, Prana, and Life Force that are quite widely accepted as one possible definition. The energy the Sun provides is life force; I don’t really think we are talking about two different things if we were to really understand it. We cannot exist without the Sun and these energies are what support life.

When an Eclipse occurs those energies are blocked in some way. Consider how a computer is interrupted when downloading new programs, when we have Eclipses, the Universe is stopping the flow of energy momentarily to allow something important to be transferred or downloaded into our consciousness.

Take into account the planetary bodies involved in an Eclipse: the Sun - the Universe or God, the Earth - our consciousness, and the Moon – our subconscious, which all work together to provide change and shift in the consciousness of humanity. In order for humanity as a whole to change we must change personally.

The signs involved are interesting as well. Gemini represents the mental body and communication, the way we think and speak. Changing how we think and the words we use can change the world.

Take time to focus on the energies being downloaded to your conscious mind. By sitting quietly, meditating or just being present during the Eclipse you are allowing the flow of the Universe to bless you!

Mercury Retrograde is back!!!!

That wonderful planet of communication and ordinary thinking is going retrograde again on November 23rd, 2011 at 11:21 p.m. PST and on the 24th at 2:21 a.m. EST.  It goes direct again on December 13th.

This is a powerful retrograde for several reasons. It takes place in Sagittarius and will be accompanied by the Sun for most of its retrograde period which will energize it’s actions, and also a New Moon Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius* will also take place during this retrograde. Think about Sagittarius. The truth and wisdom seeker, the fire of the soul says Isabel Hickey. Sagittarius energy activates the ancient wisdom from our Soul. In the form of a New Moon Eclipse, it opens us to new applied uses of ancient wisdom in the present.  It also increases our intuitive abilities. EVERYONE will be more intuitive!

When Mercury goes retrograde we find we are not able to think as clearly as we normally do. Since Mercury rules our thinking, during the retrograde our mind is not all that focused on the present, it wanders. That is, unless you are born with Mercury Retrograde.  Then it’s your high time. At least two thirds of us we are not Mercury Retrograde and everyone is affected by it. I like to remind my Mercury Retrograde people, even though this is your high cycle remember you are affected by those who will be doing things like driving their cars the wrong way on a one way street!

During this cycle: get grounded, pay attention, double check reservations, receipts and change.

If possible, take some time during this period to reflect, allow a higher energy to help you see a clearer vision about your life. Slow down and be present wherever you are and get the most out of these three weeks.

Virgo and the Kabbalah

The month of September, 2011 and the sign of Virgo are known as Elul in the astrological teachings according to the Kabbalah.  I go to http://www.kabbalah.com/ and read the articles and twelve signs according to the Kabbalah.  The Kabbalah is ancient Hebrew wisdom that traces itself back 3,800 years. It’s more about the esoteric teachings of Judaism and includes Astrology, Numerology, Angels, Reincarnation and much more. I really resonate with the Kabbalah Astrology.

The month of Elul, means the month of repentance because it leads into Libra which is about Judgment. Elul is also considered the month where the Gates of Heaven are open to us. This means we have a gift from Source in the month of September where we are able to access more help from Spirit.

I’ve always argued that Virgo is not about perfection but about purity. Virgo is an earth sign and I feel Virgo is more like sand. It’s mutable so it moves easily and it’s also arid and dry. Virgo, like sand, is considered a time to purify. Did you know that one of the best ways to purify water is to run it through a sand filter? The small microscopic jagged edges of the grains of salt will catch even the smallest impurity in the water.

This month take time to purify your life. Clearing out clutter, letting go of old and outdated clothes and any energy that no longer supports who you are makes room for the new energy to enter our lives. And the things we give away blesses someone else life as something new.

It’s a wonderful month to have a garage sale or even try a circulation day where everyone simply exchanges things and no money changes hands.

Consider something else Kabbalah Astrology talks about: no matter how much negativity we tend to accumulate, the Soul is always pure and positive. Virgo is a time to purge out the impurities, release negative things in our life and embrace our true positive self in the purest light.

Mercury Retrograde

August 2, 2011 to August 26, 2011

The planet of communication and intellect will be going retrograde on August 2, 2011 8:50 p.m. PST and 11:50 p.m. EST until August 26th when it turns direct at 3:03 p.m. PST and 6:03 p.m. EST.

When Mercury goes retrograde we find we are not able to think as clearly as we normally do. Since Mercury rules our thinking, during the retrograde our mind is not all that focused on the present; it wanders. That is unless you are born with Mercury retrograde, then it’s your high time. At least 2/3rds of us are not Mercury retrograde and everyone is affected by it. Solar Eclipse and Grand Cardinal Cross

The New Moon in Cancer with a Solar Eclipse is joined by one of the most powerful and foretelling configurations of 2011. Eclipses create movement and change because they allow an energy to move into our world that will enhance any changes in motion, and create motion where there is stagnation. This one; however, is really extraordinary and every astrologer I know is considering the possibilities being ushered in the early morning hours of July 1st.

New Moon phases are active cycles where the light grows in the sky each night.  Joining the Solar Eclipse are several other planets, aligned with one another forming a Grand Cardinal Cross in the sky as well as in our natal charts. Somewhere in your life four major points of energy are going to activate.  For those who have planets in early degrees of the four signs it will be even more significant to create change and movement more directly.

A Grand Cross is where four points form a complete cross with the energies of squares and oppositions, two of the most powerful relationship aspects planets can form. It allows the four or more planets involved to work together.  Tension is often created, but ultimately it releases energy to motivate and take action. The Cardinal cross promotes action for change. In Fixed signs the cross provides a strength to endure and accomplish seemingly difficult challenges and a Mutable cross discovers support and help from the world. All crosses provide significant accomplishments. Crisis is often associated with Grand Crosses, but only to provide us with momentum and needed change that eventually lead us to strengths and understandings we would otherwise not be able to accomplish.

The five planetary bodies involved are all very powerful and the four cardinal signs in each element combine to complete a dynamic picture about what is to come.

Imagine the five planetary bodies and the signs they are in as superpowers in the world today. The Sun and the Moon are holding the summit, they are the most powerful in that have joined forces to increase their power.  In the sign of Cancer they represent the past and the concerns for protection and security. The Summit is calling into action and cooperation the other super powers to contribute their best assets to help release old patterns and rewrite the laws man has believed personally, and as a planet, to be real and necessary to have security. Cancer, after all, is about protection and security; however, this group has realized that it’s imperative to let go of anything based in fear; put the past behind. Saturn in Libra asks that we create a new balance and harmony with one another.  Uranus in Aries is demanding change and wants to break new ground; it embraces technology and innovation for the good and no longer wants to use it as a weapon. Finally, Pluto in Capricorn enters the picture with possibly the most significant contribution, a plan for absolute transformation of consciousness where we realize how everything we do has a serious effect on everyone on the planet and we must begin to act with accountability, transparency and honesty. Those who claim to be in it for the good of others, like politicians, doctors, lawyers, educators, etc… will be held accountable for the oath taken. We will all be held accountable for our own commitments and contributions.

The Grand Cross is truly a great sign in the sky that change is upon us and the days ahead will be fruitful and productive as long as we let go of resistance.

Eclipses, Eclipses, Eclipses!

For the next month we will be experiencing Eclipses on each of the Moon cycles. We will have a New Moon Solar Eclipse on June 1st, 2011, followed by a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on June 15th and another New Moon Solar Eclipse on July 1st.

A New Moon occurs when the Moon is exactly next to the Sun, the same degree of the Sun Sign, which makes the Moon dark because there is no light shining on the side of it visible from Earth.

When we describe the word “energy” most of us understand that there are also spiritual terms such as Chi, Prana and Life Force that are quite widely accepted as one possible definition. The energy the Sun provides is life force; I don’t really think we are talking about two different things if we were to really understand it. We cannot exist without the Sun and these energies are what support life.

When an Eclipse occurs those energies are blocked in some way. Consider how a computer is interrupted when downloading new programs; when we have Eclipses, the Universe is stopping the flow of energy momentarily to allow something important to be transferred or downloaded into our consciousness.  Take into account the planetary bodies involved in an Eclipse: the Sun - the Universe or God the Earth - our consciousness, and the Moon – our subconscious, which all work together to provide change and shift in the consciousness of humanity. In order for humanity as a whole to change we must change personally.

The signs involved are interesting as well: Gemini represents the mental body and communication, the way we think and speak. Changing how we think and the words we use can change the world. The next sign is Cancer, which represents the emotional body which includes the subconscious, what fears are being harbored in your subconscious?  Perhaps a memory you didn’t realize is affecting the way you feel about life? Then finally we have Sagittarius which represents higher wisdom, the shamanic teachings, truth.  Once we embrace these we are elevated and freed of our own limiting ideas.

So when we experience an Eclipse something is happening in a powerful way, but don’t expect too much drama instantly. Most astrologers agree that the effects of an Eclipse’s energy can last up to 6 months, which means the information is available and flowing into our consciousness slowly and consistently for many months. During that time many events can be set off that can be attributed to the Eclipse, but I think much more is happening in the unseen realm of the subconscious mind. So I like to focus on the individual rather than try to predict earthquakes and assassinations.

Each Eclipse occurs in a specific sign and degree, consider where that occurs on your natal birth chart and perhaps a planet as well, and you’ll have a good idea as to what the Eclipse energy is about for you. The first Eclipse is 11 degrees Gemini, the second is 24 degrees Sagittarius and third is 9 degrees Cancer.   Check the Moon Phase page every two weeks for the exact time and date these occur.

It’s always a good idea to spend some time in meditation during an Eclipse since the subconscious is a key player. With the intention to be given a message or symbol as to what the Eclipse is about, try a journey into your own inner realms, perhaps asking one of your guides to help you.  Sit quietly and do some deep breathing to clear the mind. See a box; it can look any way you want.  The box holds the message or symbol. The box can be handed to you or float into your hands from space, as it gently lands in your hands let it open slowly and look inside. If you find it opens and nothing is inside consider you are not ready to know this information, not that there is nothing for you!

Some people may want to do a ceremony and set an intention for the energy being provided by the Eclipse, which I would recommend doing as the Eclipse energy is actually happening. Consider starting the ceremony a half hour before the time the Eclipse occurs and finishing a half hour after.  You can also do your meditation during this time as well.

Whatever the energy of the Eclipse means for you, know that movement and change are inevitable and in the bigger picture embracing new ideas and choosing to change something in your life to a more positive echelon is always a good idea. With the support of the Eclipses catch the wave of energy offered and remember to be grateful that such a gift is so generously presented.

Ceres

The Goddess of the Harvest, Fertility, and Nurturing.  The Great Mother.

Ceres is now included in planetary ephemeris’! While I was visiting with my friend and favorite astrologer Cayelin Castell recently, she showed me the new revised ephemeris for the 21st Century from Michelson Press, which now includes Ceres as a dwarf planet and not just an asteroid. An ephemeris is a book that charts planetary movement through the signs.   Essentially it tells us what planet is in what sign on any given date.

Ceres is the Roman Goddess of agriculture or food and motherhood. In Greek mythology she is known as Demeter which means “Earth Mother”, who is the mother of Persephone.  The book Asteroid Goddesses by Demetra George, which to most astrologers is the quintessential book on interpreting asteroids in one’s chart, says Ceres is the Universal Mother, our own experience of being mothered and loved and also how we mother our self.  In the birth chart it shows how we give and receive nurturance, how we develop feelings of self worth and how we experience attachment and the lessons we must learn about loss and letting go. In ancient times she was the Goddess of fertility, the crops and the harvest.  She really represented Mother Nature and how she sustains us or abandons us. It’s also the root word for cereal because of the connection to wheat and grain and the festival held in mid-April named for her, Cerealia.

Many astrologers feel Ceres plays a significant role in the chart of disasters.  Consider the idea that a natural disaster feels as though we have made Mother Nature release her fury.  Ceres certainly seems prominent in the chart of the recent earthquake in Japan where it was conjunct, or right next to, Neptune in the earthquake chart. Neptune represents the oceans and water. The tsunami created by the earthquake was actually more damaging then the earthquake that set it off, as well as the sea water needed to cool the nuclear plant reactors, that is being poured back into the sea!

Ceres is also conjunct the Sun in the chart of Japan. In the chart of the Pompeii volcanic eruption, Ceres is conjunct Venus. Pompeii was a vacation spot for the rich at the time; it was considered by many as a place where decadence and overindulgence were a way of life for those who lived there. Venus would be the planet encouraging overindulgence in pleasure!

O.K., so why is Ceres so important? I think it helps us in our personal birth chart to see where we need to understand our own issue with nurturing ourselves and what we hold onto with fear; it’s actually similar to the sign of Cancer.  So if someone had Ceres  in Libra in the second house, they may value relationships more than themselves, needing  a relationship to feel self worth and value, and they might  hold on to bad relationships until it creates a disaster in their life. This might be someone who literally goes bankrupt trying to please someone else.

I always consider that when a planet, even a dwarf planet, is found, charted or changed, it means something in us as a collective has changed. With Ceres now considered a dwarf planet and included in a full ephemeris, it means we are all beginning to understand how to nurture ourselves better and also to let go knowing there is nothing to fear.  Instead of the idea of giving being better than receiving, we are learning it is a circle; both giving and receiving is a necessary part of keeping the flow of prosperity going. You just have to understand what side of the circle you’re on! If you’re afraid to let go of something because you don’t believe something or someone better is waiting to fill that space, then you are blocking energy and not allowing the flow of the Universe. If you want to know where Ceres is in your chart you can go to http://www.librarising.com/astrology/tables/ceres.html

My suggestion with any interpretation is stay on the side of positive; do not look for what disaster Ceres foretells in your chart.  Instead consider what you can learn about nurturing yourself. If you give to yourself you will have more to give the world.

This is what I’ve always loved about astrology, there is always something new to learn.  Ceres is now going to be a new teacher for us; we should take our time getting to know her. Instead of rushing in to interpret her in your chart, sit back and observe how she is working in your life. Everyone is unique and experiences these energies in a myriad of ways. Take your time, Ceres has been quietly watching over us like a patient Mother for millennia; she now reveals herself to us because she knows we’re ready to embrace the unconditional love she offers.

The Hero's Journey

“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”

From the introduction to “The Hero With a Thousand Faces” by Joseph Campbell.

As I began to think about this amazing month with the unique stellium* in Aries, I wondered how to describe to my readers just what an extraordinary time this is for all mankind. We are not just witnessing a fantastic journey the planets are taking in the sign of Aries; we are participating in the journey. Each and every one of us is experiencing this powerful release of energy through the Aries fire. The planets involved will provide the path.

Fire releases energy that has been brought into form and now needs to cycle into new possibilities. Aries is the fire of initiation and inspiration, but Aries is also the true Hero of the zodiac. Willing to venture into uncharted places, they raise their sword and shout, “ONWARD!” They understand that ours is a constant journey. They teach us that just as soon as we return from one, we must immediately prepare to go on the next and the next and the next.

When people ask me, “When will this cycle be over?” because they feel exasperated and tired from their quest, my answer is always the same, “When the next one is ready to begin!”

I am going to do something different this month.  Using the twelve stages or steps of Joseph Campbell’s, “The Hero’s Journey”, I compare the twelve signs that provide the journey for everyone. Even though each of us have a unique birth chart: Sun sign, Moon sign etc… everyone has twelve houses to their chart and everyone has all twelve signs divided into those houses in their chart.

So as you read this understand that it applies to all of us; we all experience the twelve signs in our life by how our houses provide a step in the journey. The chart is a circle, it never ends.

  1. Ordinary World – Aries: Here we are inspired by some unknown force within to leave the known mundane world and seek something new, be brave with sword in hand. The fire within summons us and we must listen.
  2. Call to Adventure – Taurus: Rooted in a love of pleasure and a desire to have more, we are liberated by our own inner desire to what might await us, the treasures and pleasures the new world may hold. The scent of the forbidden flower wafts through our inner nostrils.
  3. Refusal of the Call – Gemini: The sign that reflects opposition, rules our intellect, our reasoning ability. It asks us, “Why go on this journey, what if you can’t succeed, what if you fail?” Soon curiosity to know the answer emerges victorious. Like its ruler Mercury, our feet grow wings.
  4. Meeting the Mentor – Cancer: This water sign is pure intuition. A mysterious power in us that says, “Trust the force” and provides the secret language within that speaks to us. We feel the protective guides that help us on the journey. Faith is born.
  5. Crossing the First Threshold – Leo: The fire of the heart gives us courage because it helps us remember that we are the creator; we have the power to create this journey however we want.  The cowardly lion in all of us ventures forth with pride and passion.
  6. Test, Allies, Enemies – Virgo: The great analyzer experiences the many parts of the whole, we sort out that which is not real in us and are left with a purer sense of who we are; true power is revealed. We now see our true self and our true beauty.
  7. Approach to the Inmost Cave – Libra: The sign of relationships, harmony and balance, it is our desire to find relationships with others that support our journey. This allows us to discover a greater reason than our self to continue. “ I” becomes “We” and now our quest is exponential; we have a reason to complete the journey and return. Love is the greatest power that exists.
  8. Ordeal – Scorpio: The sign of death and rebirth.  We experience crisis and face our greatest human fear: death. Through this energy we discover that it is through the transformation of death that we discover our infinity and we move beyond fear. We are now truly free.
  9. Reward – Sagittarius: The sign of the seeker of higher wisdom, we find our wisdom was within us all the time. We reach the stage of our journey that we were seeking all along but didn’t know it. Divine wisdom is revealed; the Golden Fleece is in hand and no hand can ever take it from us. We own our journey.
  10. The Road Back – Capricorn: The sign that seeks to climb the highest peak now surveys all that is, with new found wisdom and inner strength we want to go back to the ordinary world and lead others on the journey. The Hero understands the path of the Hero.
  11. Resurrection – Aquarius: The bearer of wisdom understands the importance of sharing what we learn with others, generously giving the rewards of their journey to everyone because we are not truly free unless everyone is free. Oneness is grokked.
  12. Return with the Elixir – Pisces: The visionary, the sign that brings spirituality to our humanness, the elixir is spirit. The ecstasy experienced as heaven on earth lets us settle into our human world with our own holy grail. We discover through the vision of Pisces that our world is not so ordinary after all. Spirit is everywhere.

*Stellium - a group of four or more planets in the same sign. This month we will experience continually five to seven planets in Aries. The fire will release energies in all of us to make change, find our inner hero and start on new paths in life. Ready, Set, Go!

Mercury Retrograde

The planet of communication and intellect will be going into its first retrograde of the year on March 30th, 2011 at 1:48 p.m. PST and 4:48 p.m. EST and goes direct again on April 23 at 3:04 a.m. PST and 6:03 a.m. EST

This particular retrograde will be intensified by combining with Mars, Jupiter and Uranus especially at the beginning of April. April 2nd and 3rd the Moon will enter into the sign of Aries and will also be going into the New Moon phase. On those two days in particular extreme caution is advised when driving; watch your temper and be patient. The intense fire of Aries will be initiating wonderful energies of inspiration, new ideas and motivation on these days. If we are unconscious of our state of mind; however, we might feel the awakening energy through something unexpected.

When Mercury goes retrograde we find we are not able to think as clearly as we normally do. Since Mercury rules our thinking, during the retrograde our mind is not all that focused on the present; it wanders. That is, unless you are born with Mercury retrograde, then it’s your high time. At least 2/3rds of us are not Mercury retrograde and everyone is affected by it. I like to remind my Mercury retrograde people, even though this is your high cycle remember you are affected by those who will be doing things like driving their cars the wrong way on a one-way street!

During this cycle: get grounded, pay attention, double check reservations, receipts and change.

Reflect on where we’re headed, maybe re-think a decision. Of course, our western thinking is rooted in doing so much that we keep trying to swim against the current. If possible, take some time during this period to reflect; allow a higher energy to help you see a clearer vision about your life. Slow down and be present wherever you are and get the most out of these three weeks.

Uranus in Aries

On March 11, 2011 at 4:52 p.m. PST and 7:52 p.m. EST, Uranus, the great awakener will enter into the sign of Aries for the first time in 84 years. Not since 1927 have we on planet Earth experienced the fire of pioneering, enthusiastic Aries igniting Uranus.

Uranus is the energy of change.  It provides divine consciousness to the earthly or human consciousness through powerful waves of energy that can be disruptive at times, like an earthquake. But its focus is to awaken us and get us to move forward and change for the better.

If we are resisting change and trying to hold on to old ways, it’s our resistance that causes the disruption in our life. If we begin to embrace change, look for ways to do something with a different perspective, the wave of energy of Uranus in Aries will give us inspiration, enthusiasm and passion to accomplish it.

We will have so many opportunities during its almost 8 year journey; many new innovations in technology, medicine, education and just about any area of humanity will benefit, it’s up to us as to how easily or how chaotic it happens. We may see many “new” forms develop like a new political party, or a new type of energy source that we hadn’t thought of before.

What’s most important is paying attention to your personal changes.  All of us have something that we know we must change to be able to move forward in life.  Uranus will be happy to provide a clue or two if you think you really don’t know what that is, just look for the sparks beginning somewhere in your life. That will be the heavens blowing the divine sparks into some part of you that has been desiring a fire to be lit.

Jupiter in Aries

On January 22, 2011 the planet Jupiter, the great expander, entered into the sign of Aries where it will remain until June 4, 2011. Typical of Aries, it will be a quick and impatient transit.  It entered into Aries in June of 2010 and stayed until mid-August, so by this June it will have visited Aries for two brief stays totaling approximately eight and half months. Jupiter usually stays in each sign a full twelve months and sometimes slightly longer if it retrogrades. So I thought it was somewhat interesting for it to behave in Aries like an Aries!

Brief as it may be, it is a powerful transit because of the fire element of Aries as well as the upcoming conjoining of Uranus entering into Aries in mid-March, which will be like adding rocket fuel to a race car! The last time Uranus entered into Aries was 1927, and coincidently Jupiter was also in Aries that year as well.

We can expect sudden changes in the world and our personal lives in the months ahead. All will bring about needed change to usher us into the new era of Uranus in Aries. Innovation, brilliant ideas, (yes you will find yourself saying “Why didn’t I think of that before?!”) and of course some upheaval. Aries is not known for being graceful or treading lightly!

Check your personal birth chart and see what house you have the sign of Aries in; this will be the area of your life most affected by these transits. If you have actual planets in Aries, you can expect significant changes in your life! Put on your seat belt, it’s going to be a wild ride.

The Solar Eclipse

A Solar Eclipse occurs during a New Moon when the Moon blocks the Sun from the Earth; we usually have about two total eclipses and several partial eclipses each year.  This one on January 4th, 2011 is a partial eclipse, adding to the energy of the Lunar Eclipse we experienced on December 21st on Winter Solstice. If we are to understand astrologically what eclipses are we simply have to understand light. The energy of both the Sun and Moon provide light.  The Sun is direct and its energy is more about what we experience outwardly and actively or during day light, the Moon is about the unconscious or light within us, the night.

Eclipses provide a window of energy that intensifies and charges the energy already flowing through each of us and its effect can last up to 6 months.  As I wrote about last month, the Lunar Eclipse stimulated wisdom in our DNA, ancient knowledge we are now ready to use. The Solar Eclipse, although only partial, will allow that which has been activated to find a way to come to light in our daily lives. It may not be as spectacular as it sounds, we must remember that energy transcends from the energetic realms to the earthly realm subtly. In our earthly world we have to experience these changes slowly and subtly, I equate it to your hair growing, you don’t really notice it but it does grow and over time it can grow quite a bit.   I always recommend taking time to meditate sometime during the day of the eclipse.  Becoming quiet and still allows us be more aware of the energy and the subtle shift going on; perhaps you’ll experience where this is happening for you personally.

If you know your natal chart, consider where you have Capricorn, this will be the area of your life you will likely experience the energetic shift brought about by the eclipse. If you also have planets in Capricorn the effect will be even greater.

Lunar Eclispe and Winter Solstice

Today is Winter Solstice, 2010 and we are going to experience something very rare and special, a lunar eclipse with the Solstice. The last time we had this occurrence was about 1554; almost 500 years ago.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes behind the earth and the earth blocks the Sun’s light to the Moon. Remember a full moon is when the moon is exactly opposite the Sun and the light is focused on the Moon. A lunar eclipse can only occur when the moon is full.

This particular eclipse is rare because it also occurs on the Winter Solstice, the day when the Earth’s tilt is the farthest from the Sun and so it marks the day when the Earth begins its journey back toward the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere.  For a more detailed explanation check December’s Musings

It’s said an eclipse provides an added energy like a big wave, that energy can last up to six months. Since this one is taking place with the Moon in Gemini and the Sun in Sagittarius, first consider their meaning or purpose.  Both are about spreading wisdom; Sagittarius imparts wisdom through higher learning and Gemini is about the shamanic wisdom that gets passed down through storytelling. The simplest way to interpret it is inner wisdom from the soul becomes available to your consciousness. This will be a huge shift for humanity. Every person, rock, and tree will experience the powerful wisdom within its DNA subtly releasing to its conscious awareness.

Lastly, to personally understand the meaning of this event, knowing where it takes place in your natal chart holds the key to what kind of wisdom you will be accessing and through what area of your life. The house it takes place in will provide you with an idea about what area of life you will be developing more wisdom, and certainly if you have a planet or something significant in Sagittarius or Gemini it will be even more powerful for you.

Most feel this is the beginning of the 2012 turning point for the world since it will occur exactly two years from this date. Celebrate the gift this wisdom will bring to us as a people and in our personal lives.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury retrograde begins December 10, 2010 at 7:06 a.m. EST and 4:06 a.m. PST until December 29th at 11:21 p.m. PST, and December 30 at 2:21 a.m. EST when it turns direct.

Here comes Mercury retrograde just in time for the holidays! Mercury the planet of communication and earthly thinking (as opposed to ethereal thoughts) enters into its last retrograde motion for 2010. I can just imagine the amount of gift returns that will occur!

Remember, unless you are born during Mercury retrograde (and even if you are born with Mercury retrograde you are still affected by all those who are not during this time) you follow some basic guidelines for sanity.  Make sure to confirm appointments, airline tickets and flight schedules (oh, expect some delays due to snowed in airports, grounded planes, birds flying into jet engines, computer glitches, gremlins that William Shatner sees on the wings).  Double check recipes and do not watch reruns of Glee, OK Glee would be the exception, but everything else will distract you too much while trying to bake holiday cookies, watch your driving and everyone else’s, pay attention to your wallet, credit cards and do take the time to add up the bill, check the receipt,  and if something breaks take the rest of the year off, drink a little extra eggnog and it will fix itself after the 30th!

Our stress levels tend to go up during Mercury retrograde and we get really stressed during the holidays; add them together and many will find themselves in the ER because of anxiety symptoms or worse. So please take a chill pill and perhaps this retrograde is divinely ordered to get us to really let it be about the more meaningful aspect of the holiday and move away from what we all complain about but cannot seem to break free of: materialism.

Here’s to a wonderful retrograde, may it help you remember who you are and why you’re here!

Peace and Love.

Venus and Jupiter Direct

On November 18, 2010 both Venus and Jupiter move out of retrograde and into direct motion.  There are no accidents!  Venus, the planet of what we love and desire and Jupiter, the great expander are getting us ready for 2011.

Venus completes her turn in retrograde having given us a moment or two to consider what we really want in life and now begins moving forward, releasing the energy of desire in us.  At the same time Jupiter also moves out of retrograde giving us one last chance in Pisces for a few months to reap the rewards of spiritual growth.  Jupiter and Venus are working together to help us attain our dreams more unlimited than ever before.

Venus Retrograde

Venus is retrograde from October 8, 2010 3:06 a.m. EST and 12:06 a.m. PST until November 18, 2010 at 4:19 p.m. EST and 1:19 p.m. PST.

The same way Mercury retrograde allows us to take a moment and reassess life, to rethink before moving forward, Venus retrograde gives us 40 days every 18 months to stop and reassess what we want.  So often we are questing after something in life and we can easily lose sight of why we began to want it in the first place.  Venus the planet of desire and passion asks, “Do you really want this? Are you sure?”

The Venus retrograde period often provides a window of opportunity for us to finally achieve something we’ve wanted for a long time, especially if we have been dedicated, patient and persistent in staying true to our heart.  It is what it means to never give up on your dreams.  I always think about a line from the movie “Dumb and Dumber” when Jim Carey’s character asks the question, “Do you think I have a chance?” when asking the woman he dreams of having a relationship with if there is a chance they could be together.  Her answer is that he has maybe a one in a million chance and Jim’s character becomes elated and says, “So I do a chance!”  As far as he’s concerned one is all he needs.  Venus is interested in how we believe in ourselves, she wants to help us learn to love our self and mirror that in how others love us.  This particular Venus is retrograde in Scorpio, the sign that must learn that the material world is valuable and earthly love is descended from heaven.  During this time ask yourself, “What about this physical world are you not valuing?  What part of yourself do you think of as worthless?”  As my dear friend Louise Hay says in her book “You Can Heal Your Life” say, “I approve of myself” a few hundred times a day and watch how you transform your world!

New Moon in Virgo

Mercury, the planet that rules our thinking, continues to be retrograde until September 12th, 2010 at 7:09 p.m. EST and 4:09 p.m. PST.

Personally, I am looking forward to it moving forward once again.  I have witnessed some of the worst car accidents and poor driving choices during this retrograde, not to mention a plethora of “not thinking” or as my husband likes to call it, “user error” mistakes on a daily basis on my part.  The other morning I actually cracked an egg and tossed it down the disposal and was left holding the shell!  Okay, at least I didn’t try to scramble the shell.

We will experience the Sun in Virgo most of the month and the New Moon takes place on the 8th at 6:30 a.m. EST and 3:30 a.m. PST.  The New to Full cycle of the moon is considered a good time to start things as the light is growing and so does anything that begins in that cycle.

A Virgo Moon, and especially a New Moon, is good for:

ƒ  Cleaning drawers and closets to clear clutter
ƒ  Organize the garage, attic or any storage areas
ƒ  Start a healthy eating regime
ƒ  Get a wellness check up
ƒ  Have a blood or saliva analysis

In Business

ƒ  Prioritize plans and create outlines for upcoming meetings
ƒ  Gather statistics and data; create a graph to “see the big picture”
ƒ Research your industry and market

How do you know when the Moon is New?

The New Moon is always the same degree and sign as the Sun.  The Full Moon is the exact opposite sign and degree of the Sun!   When the Moon is in Virgo and the Sun is also in Virgo, it’s New!

Let’s keep in mind it is still Mercury retrograde during this New Moon.  Starting something new or making a major decision might not be the best idea until Mercury, and our thinking, is moving forward after the 12th.  So go ahead and catch up on projects that require good Virgo analysis and organization and if possible let the big decisions stay on the back burner until after the 12th of September.

Its okay to wait until next month’s New Moon in Libra, it will give you a chance to start new things in your life that will be in balance and harmony!

September 22nd is the Autumnal Equinox

The Sun enters Libra at 8:09 pm PST and 11:09 pm EST

The Equinox is the day when day and night are completely equal. They happen twice a year, the Vernal Equinox when the Sun enters Aries and the Autumnal Equinox when the Sun enters Libra.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury goes retrograde this month on Friday August 20th, 2010 until September 12th. Mercury rules our thinking, our everyday mind that helps us drive, count money, read recipes, etc.  Those are things we should pay attention to during the retrograde period; be extra careful while driving, count your change and re-read that recipe!  It’s not some fickle hand of fate tricking us, it’s simply user error!  We are not thinking clearly during this cycle.  It’s best not to make appointments until the retrograde moves direct, but some you just can’t avoid, so make sure to confirm any appointments made during this time.
